Miami’s Top Ten Public High Schools

Is your child graduating from middle school soon? It’s never too early to start looking – especially if you might have to move to the right neighborhood. The best Miami high schools on U.S. News & World Report’s list are all over the city map.

The Top Ten and Their Neighborhoods

Design and Architecture Senior High, a magnet school in the Design District, won the top spot and #2 in all of Florida. In Calle Ocho you’ll find number two on the Miami list, International Studies Charter High School. Up next is the International Studies Preparatory Academy in Coral Gables. Number four, the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy in Little Havana stresses science and technology. Archimedean Upper Conservatory Charter School in Kendale Lakes rounds out the top five.

Sixth and seventh are the Jose Marti Mast Academy in Hialeah and the Mast Academy in Key Biscayne, respectively. Number eight, iPreparatory Academy on Biscayne Boulevard, emphasizes computers and innovative teaching methods. Closing out the list are the Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy at number nine and Richmond Heights’ Coral Reef Senior High School at number ten.

    Making the Grade

U.S. News worked with research firm RTI International to rank the best public high schools in the country. They began by eliminating schools that were “too small to be analyzed.” Then they critiqued schools based on test scores, graduation rate and preparedness for college.

Many charter and magnet schools, both free like regular public schools, earned the highest rankings. Though funded by taxes and private donations, charter schools can operate without school boards or government interference.

They often use contemporary teaching methods, focus on certain subjects, and offer small classes. Magnet schools are extremely competitive with an intense application process. They welcome students from anywhere as long as the applicant excels in their chosen specialty, such as the arts.
